For over 100 years, the
chemical composition of individual parts of the vine plant has been the
subject of numerous scientific studies. These studies revealed great
differences between both the individual parts of the plant, as well as the
different types of grapevine with respect to their composition.
The most important active ingredients of the vine leaves are the
flavonoids, the colouring agents contained in the plant. Flavonoids belong
to the secondary plant materials, to a large group of bioactive substances
(herbal active ingredients). They have an anti-inflammatory function and
are responsible for the elasticity and wall thickness (capillary sealing)
of the blood vessels. In other words - flavonoids can have a positive
effect on the human body. They are supposed to not only act on the vessels
of the legs but also on the whole circulatory system including the heart.
Flavonoids can counteract increased permeability of the vessels. The
oedema-protective action of the red vine leaf extract can also be
attributed to the flavonoid fraction.
Extracts of red vine leaves have therefore been used medicinally for many
decades, mainly because they contain flavonoids with vasoactive and
vasoprotective properties. The flavonoid content in the vine leaf of 4% to
6% is considerably higher than that in other parts of the plant. The red
vine leaf is also richer in anthocyans (tannins) than all differently
coloured leaves. The tannin content is also dependent upon other factors,
such as the stage of development of the leaves, their position on the vine
plant and the season, with the result that the harvesting of the leaves
for the red vine leaf extract is a science in itself.
