Vein disorders - a national
disease; a slogan of this nature is easily coined. Nevertheless, rarely
has there been so much truth behind a simple assertion. 50 to 60% of all
Germans now suffer from venous insufficiency and the trend is upwards.
Scarcely anybody who is over 30 years of age still has all-round healthy
veins. Whereas in younger people it is every second woman and every fourth
man who suffers from venous insufficiency, this more or less evens itself
out in later years. The incidence of vein disorders is generally higher in
older people because the vein walls lose their elasticity with age and
this encourages the disorder.
When we look at Europe as a whole, this already presents a frightening
picture with undreamt-of consequences. About 25% of the total population
have leg vein disorders requiring chronic or intermittent treatment.
Studies have now been performed in six to ten year-old schoolchildren
which already show the precursors of a future disorder. The best advice is
prevention rather than treatment. Do something for your veins. Whenever
symptoms appear, the disorder is usually already well advanced.
