Some tips for pregnancy:
Wear flat and comfortable shoes; they will provide support and assist the venous muscle pump in its work.
Avoid standing or sitting for long periods. Elevate your legs as often as is practical.
You should get some exercise. A daily walk is a must. Swimming, cycling and gymnastics should also be part of the exercise programme.
Put your legs under the shower every day. The water should be cool, not ice-cold.
The wrong diet is always a risk factor for your veins. Do not start eating for two, this puts additional stress on the body. What is called for is a balanced diet with lots of dietary fibre, vitamins and carbohydrates.
Activate your muscle pump whenever possible. When sitting simply curl and straighten your toes from time to time.
The connection between possible varicose vein formation and pregnancy is now recognised. This is one of the reasons why vein disorders are more frequently found in women than in men. Vein disorders can appear for the first time or be exacerbated during pregnancy. One consolation is that smaller varicose veins subsequently often resolve of their own accord.
