Compression therapy, that is
the use of external pressure, is the oldest method and simultaneously the
most important adjuvant treatment for vein disorders. It can be used for a
lifetime to complement another treatment or as a monotherapy. Bandages or
medical compression stockings are used. The individually fitted stocking
is always to be preferred to the bandages. The external pressure has the
effect of only allowing a little blood into the varicose veins and of
preventing the accumulation of fluid in the tissues. Only if compression
therapy is used on a regular basis can the progression of the disease be
delayed and symptoms relieved. It is the doctor who prescribes the
compression stocking which must be precisely fitted. It is not, however,
possible to cure varicose veins using this method. |
