It is possible to regard all
veins in the human body as an open system of tubes. Owing to the constant
pressure which prevails in the superficial leg veins, in many people these
veins become enlarged. Varicose veins become visible. As a consequence of
this enlargement, the venous valves no longer close properly. They lose
their valve effect, blood no longer flows to the heart but remains in the
legs and is no longer reintroduced into the circulatory system by the
muscle pump. Without treatment, chronic venous insufficiency can develop. |
